What is the Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel:
This event is free and open to all schools (primary, secondary, SEN / ASN / ALN) to engage pupils in active travel before the school day begins.
Every day of the challenge schools compete to see who can record the greatest number of pupils walking, using a wheelchair, scooting or cycling to school.
At the end of the event, the school gains a position on the Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel leader board, based on their best 5 days, and receive a certificate.
The Sustrans website has a range of resources available including presentations, posters and curriculum linked lesson plans.
There is even the chance to win prizes if 15% of your school takes part each day of the challenge.

Benefits of Active Travel:
Walking and Cycling along with other forms of physical activity can promote good physical and mental health and help children start the school day focused and alert.
Travelling to and from school by active forms can also reduce traffic congestion and improve the air quality around the school site.
Adults can also benefit the same way as children and help improve concentration at work as well as improve overall fitness and well-being.
